Hey guys, I’m Azraa. I’m a painter who’s current practice explores my position as a Muslim woman in 21st century Britain, the work examines themes of gender, sexuality, xenophobia, Islamophobia, femininity and religion whilst also revealing aspects of my identity. I also deconstruct notions of orientalism, witnessed in many paintings from the 18th and 19th centuries, to disencumber (neo)colonial binaries and re-appropriate the image of the Muslim woman. Through large scale figurative oil paintings, dramatic composition and the juxtaposition of individual discordant elements, my paintings are both ambiguous yet suggestive – essentially encouraging interpretation based on subjective experience.
