It is a commonly held view within the scientific community that its only a matter of time before we begin to make machines that are more intelligent than ourselves. But will artificial intelligence ever attain a state of consciousness as we know it?  In fact neuroscience hypothesises that consciousness is generated by the interoperation of various parts of the brain, called the neural correlates of consciousness (NCC). Proponents of Artificial Consciousness believe it is possible to construct computer systems that can simulate this NCC interoperation. If this does happen, what will this means to the status and rights of AI and our relationship with them?

This opens up a possibility for a range of critical art practice…or not
