In the beginning of Unit one, I took some days off and went on a hike across three provinces in China, namely Jiangxi, Anhui and Zhejiang.
The hiking path is an 40km long ancient path originally for commercial trade in the hinterland. Most of the towns on the path are now crowded with overpopulated Chinese art students who endeavour to attend higher academic institutions.
The activities of students in the towns are very monotonous and those activities make the town even more confusing. The residents are out of control in a sense and have no ideas whether to follow the councillors’ advocate of opening small businesses or to keep the town as it is so that those art students would still be attracted to the cultural marvel of those towns thus generate financial benefit for them.
The whole area is crazily laid out in a tedious state of melancholy.
