For our live project, my group decided upon a space at the Barbican which straddles the line between public and private.

My idea was formulated as a commentary on urbanisation and gentrification – the phasing out of spaces and modes of existences, attempts toward a homogenised, sanitised urban experience.

My artwork was items of clothing tied together, bleached within the washing machine during the course of the event.

There was an engagement with a member of the public, which resulted in a debate on what was appropriate in terms of occupying such “interstitial“ spaces.

My views on this are that it is problematic to try and say what the correct course of action should have been (to stay or withdraw), as all involved parties are in an emotional state, a product of the space, past experiences, and personal values.
