ART WORLD MEMES – THE JOKE IS THE ON US ? – MY TOP 5 ARTIST MEMES
Being able to make a joke of ones self and laugh at our own stupidity is one life’s most important lessons because if you don’t take the piss out of yourself someone else surely will ! Recently i have become rather addicted to Art world memes. The Art world to most can be seen as an elitist closed off industry. However its ability to be self reflective, critical of itself and most important to joke about its idiosyncrasies is one of it’s greatest critical assets.
The meme is much more than just a piece of text and or an image. As wikipedia states……
“Dawkins defined the meme as a unit of cultural transmission, or a unit of imitation and replication, but later definitions would vary. The lack of a consistent, rigorous, and precise understanding of what typically makes up one unit of cultural transmission remains a problem in debates about memetics.” Wikipedia

Already one of the world’s foremost evolutionary biologists, he had caught the spirit of a new age. The cells of an organism are nodes in a richly interwoven communications network, transmitting and receiving, coding and decoding. Evolution itself embodies an ongoing exchange of information between organism and environment. “If you want to understand life,” Dawkins wrote, “don’t think about vibrant, throbbing gels and oozes, think about information technology.”
So these memes are more than just a joke they say something far deeper far reaching than simply a way to pass time and amuse ones self about the industry they work in i.e The Art World. They speak of a deeper truth of the human condition of our deepest need to connect with information, instructions and words. They bring us closer to our selves and to others with a sense of sharing and liking and hearting, and commenting with people we follow but on the whole will only ever know through pixels and screens.
The Internet both connects and disconnects it makes things instant and as distant as ever in an expanding or shrinking World the whole concept is oxymoronic a little like life itself. However as an Artist I find these memes highly amusing and they brighten up my day here are my
