Welcome to my sharing session! I am Marina—Caiwei Tang-
In the last mafazine, I shared the Japanese TV series “99.9 Criminal Lawyers” that I like very much.
Today I would like to continue to share a Korean TV show “Good people” related to the field of law.
Yes, it’s about lawyer, again.
These works based on the world of lawyers make me have a complicated respect for this profession. Most of these them have positive ideas and exaggerated forms (such as the inspirational movie “Legally Blonde” I watched last week) but the TV show I am going to talk about today makes me feel strong realistic resonance because behind the program planning and scripts, it is the life of a group of lawyer interns who are working really hard to get the job.
After being premiered on April 13th 2019, the “Good People,” a new entertainment show on South Korean television Channel A, follows eight law school students vying for internship at a law firm. The show presents a panel of TV personalities as “Good People supporters” including comedians Kang Ho-dong, Lee Soo-geun, announcer Shin Ah-young, judge-turned-novelist Do Jin-gi, actor Lee Si-won, and singer Jeon Bum-sun. Once hired, the interns are given the opportunity to learn the practice of law and receive tasks, and two of them are officially hired as lawyers. And the mission for panel was to guess correctly who won in each episode. As they lighted up 8 chicken lamps totally, there would be one more person could be hired as well.
The score of this show on Douban.com(a Chinese online platform)is 9.5. At first, I wondered why an intern reality show was so well received. After watching it, I understood, and I realized this score means how strong the resonances are from Chinese young people who may be newcomers as well to workplaces. From the first episode, we can see the tension of these 8 students in the initial interview. Although through the screen, their performance made me feel “Ah, you should not have said that” “If you are more decent it would be better”. But afterwards I thought about it carefully, whether it is the courage to participate in the interview or their outstanding qualifications, they are far beyond reach of my ability. After thinking about it this way, I felt the resonance of the common weakness among us more deeply. Just like the current situation of college graduates in China, even well-rounded students with excellent academic performance are faced with great competition and employment difficulties. Therefore, in this program, we can find these outstanding young people are still working hard under such pressure, and I am also strongly encouraged.
The tasks during their internship were all adapted from real cases. Most of them are often heard in life and generally need to be solved through legal channels. The first issue came from the transaction of Bitcoin between acquaintances. The principal lent Bitcoin to the borrower, but then the borrower used the updated Bitcoin market price to convert cash to repay the loan, resulting in a dispute over claims of unequal amounts. The task of these eight law students is to collect as much information and similar precedents as possible within 4 hours, and to integrate a document that is sufficient to support the client to win the case and recover the original bitcoin.
In this task, the TV program atmosphere is quite remarkable. Because among the 8 interns, there was a student who submitted rough papers two hours in advance, and another student who were one hour late and finally submitted impeccable papers. The personalities of these interns were clearly shown in their speech and behavior and the results of the tasks. But the wonderful thing is that in each task we could find each person’s field and strengths. For example, Lee Sang-ho, the student who submitted the project in advance, was a bit casual and confused at first, but later, he quietly took the lead in preparing a birthday surprise for another intern Kim Dakyung, and suddenly got the distance among these interns closer. It indeed eases the tension between competitors. And in the sixth episode of the program, facing with criminal cases, he exerted his unique logical thinking and analytical ability, becoming the first in the task of reasonable doubt.
So did the other interns. During this one-month internship, their character images gradually became full. Everyone has their own areas of expertise and some areas that are less proficient, but everyone tried their best to present their best conditions. And after actually contacting clients who really need help, their efforts also made me feel a very strong lawyer spirit. The task of free legal consultation in the countryside from the tenth episode is a typical example. The seniors of the law firm took interns to a county called Gurye, where there were no lawyers or large legal institutions, so the lawyers went to listens to some commissions from the public. Some of the commissions are civil disputes and real estate disputes, subdivided into issues of inheritance and government compensation.
The cases that appeared in the process of unpaid legal negotiations are all real, and some are complicated because of years of lack of legal aid. This task of interns is to select a case to solve in depth as groups. A group has the best proposals and results will be offered helped by senior lawyers for solving the specific case. Therefore, the interns have gone all out to help clients who lack legal knowledge and legal channels to obtain the rights they deserve.
While watching the show, I was totally shocked by the strength of persistence, trust, and carefulness from interns. They were all students of my age, still young and fragile, but they persisted again and again.
This show is like a celebrity talent show but close to ordinary workers. The growing interns and serious and responsible mentors have produced their own fan bases. Also the audiences were supportive when watching the competition. At the same time, they provide a very cordial entrance for the public outside the field of law. Another special feature of this program is the existence of “Good People supporters”. These supporters did not guide interns in real time like the mentors, but as the object of a very popular “reaction” in the current era. The edited intern lives turned for reaction, discussion, and guessing of the outcome of the competition in front of the supporters. This became a bridge for the transition of knowledge and stories to the audience, but also satisfies the majority of contemporary audiences’ sense of identification with speech through the explanation of each supporter. Because we cannot talk to the protagonists while watching the program as well, it is easier to find the same views on the content of the supporter’s speech, so that when we are watching the complete TV show, an idea of agreement is generated.
This show makes me feel quite incredible. Nowadays, many production teams spend their efforts to create attractive programs, some of which are funny, pleasing to the eye, some are popular science, and some are interactive. “Good People” contains the spread of legal knowledge or lawyers, the authenticity of the interns and the interesting interactions in their spare time, which are naturally resonant and immersive. Compared with the TV series I mentioned in the previous sharing session, although this show is more prosaic, it is also more real. I am happy to pursue this real atmosphere through the screen. To put it simply, I like this show very much, and I am very fortunate that I have been encouraged by interns and lawyers at a similar age.
Today’s sharing session is very!! Long!! Thank you for reading to the end, and I hope you can continue on the way you insist.
See you next zine.
